How to Start Your Day According to Marcus Aurelius (‘Meditations’)

Begin each day by telling yourself: Today I shall be meeting with interference, ingratitude, insolence, disloyalty, ill-will, and selfishness – all of them due to the offenders’ ignorance of what is good or evil. But for my part I have long perceived the nature of good and its nobility, the nature of evil and its meanness, and also the nature of the culprit himself, who is my brother (not in the physical sense, but as a fellow creature similarly endowed with reason and a share of the divine); therefore none of those things can injure me, for nobody can implicate me in what is degrading. Neither can I be angry with my brother or fall foul of him; for he and I were born to work together, like a man’s two hands, feet or eyelids, or the upper and lower rows of his teeth. To obstruct each other is against Nature’s law – and what is irritation or aversion but a form of obstruction.

What is the Stoic Approach?

What can I control?

There are things that we have control over, and, no matter how hard we try nor however many times we try, we cannot change the other things.

The Art of Journaling

Journaling in the morning and evening have been extremely helpful for me. In starting the day it Is a foresight of the day I envision. Whereas, the end of the day is a reflection of the day and the good and bad of the day.

Living in Discomfort

Giving things up, fasting, exercising, all the way to cold showers and polar plunges.

What stands in the way becomes the way.

It was that or what you fear is the way. The problem is usually the way out. What that means to you, for you, and how that will help you comes with time, patience, and meditation. Yeah I hated hearing that the first time too.

Be humble and honest and aware.

anything else is a lack of respect for yourself and others.

Take a bird’s- eye view

We tend to get wrapped up in our own problems. I do it all the time. But I noticed when I journaled about it and looked at it from an outside view (no matter how limiting) it brought new perspective.

Sometimes a day or two or twelve is needed to be able to handle the view in an honest way.

The ancient practice of reflection on mortality

We are not here to live forever. What do you live for? What are you willing to put your time & effort on the line for? What are you passionate about? Why are you here, and what lesson is there to learn about this current issue or situation you have?

Imagining things that could go wrong or be taken away from us

Hope for the best, BUT PLAN FOR THE WORST.

What’s the worst that could happen? Realistically? No Aliens, or mole men.

Making the best out of anything that happens

At the end of the day, we came into this world the same way we will leave - with Nothing.

We are here for a limited time, and no one will remember what happened in 200 years.

I have always believed there are lessons and signs in everything we encounter. So something that is happening now, must be preparing me for something much more important.
